Health Benefits of Mangosteen

Mangosteen is called the red mangosteen and is a perennial evergreen shrub with black fruit native to many island countries of Southeast Asia. Its origins are unclear as it is widely cultivated in different parts of the world but some facts point to its root in Thailand.

 

The common name "Mangosteen" is said to be derived from the Portuguese word meaning "Mountain mango." Another version of the story says that it was originally the mangoes of the Mangonia Island, located at a distance of about twenty-four kilometers from the southernmost tip of Malaysia. Although the fruit has the same name, it is not an actual mango.

This fruit is similar to grapes in appearance but is about one-fifth of an inch in diameter. It has dark red skin and black seeds which are pungent when ripe.
